All professional visits will take place on Wednesday afternoon, September 7th and are included in the registration fee.

Please register for one of these visits in advance as places are limited. Places may be reserved when you register for the conference.


Deutsche Nationalbibliothek / German National Library (DNB)

A glimpse behind the scenes of the German National Library: What work does the National Library carry out at its Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main sites?

The main reading room and the multimedia reading room are two of the stops on the tour. No visit would be complete without a chance to view the underground stacks containing roughly 10 million media items held for use.

Dokumentation und Archive des Hessischen Rundfunks / The Archives of Hessian Broadcasting (hr)

The digital TV news studio and the modern self-propelled audio studios are the highlights of the tour in the Hessian Broadcast (Hessischer Rundfunk). Additionally you will have the chance to have a look behind the scenes of the archives of our radio station.

Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv / German Public Broadcasting Archives (DRA)

DRA

The audio engineering department of the DRA cares for the sound-technical processing of historic sound carriers like gelatin discs, lacquer discs, foils, 78s and so on. You can watch our technicians at their daily work. On the other hand we will show you our cataloguing databases, in particular the “ARD Normdatenbank”, an authorities database for German Public Broadcasting stations, and the on-line catalogue of current-affairs discs (ZSK).

Deutsches Filminstitut / German Film Institute (DIF)

The library and text archive of the German Film Institute have been located in the German National library since 2010.

Visitors gain insight into one of the most significant special collections in film. The library boasts more than 80,000 publications and an extensive collection of journals. The text archive contains over a million articles, historical censorship documents, film programmes and press and distribution material.

Visitors will learn about work in a special library/archive and the challenges thereof. Moreover, visitors will be shown some of the treasures of the collection.

Digital Film Technology Weiterstadt (DFT)

 

Visitors at DFT Digital Film Technology in Weiterstadt will learn about the SCANITY filmscanner that is used for up to 4K digitisation and scanning projects worldwide at prestige locations such as Sony, Beeld en Geluid or Thought Equity. Visitors will also learn about an archive solution for image and sound handling that brings content together in one single system and allows for version generating for different outputs, ranging from low-res DFTiPhone format up to 4K uncompressed media files. In a live demo of FLEXXITY the presenter will show the audience how important a fully integrated system is for an efficient workflow that gently scans image and audio content very fast at the highest possible quality. In a tour through the DFT factory, visitors will see a classic mechanic manufactory including several high precision machines and metal workshops that are used to produce high precision parts within a minimum mechanical tolerance. In addition there will be a tour through the assembly department where scanners, post production tools and other equipment are built, refurbished and tested before they get shipped around the world to get used on all continents.

Buses depart to Digital Film Technology (DFT) in Weiterstadt at 13.30 h at the main entrance of Hessischer Rundfunk / Hessian Broadcasting Station (hr). Return is scheduled for 18.30 h at the Hessischer Rundfunk / Hessian Broadcasting Station (hr).
